The Nightfall Hunter: Entwined Souls
Stalking Coincidence

Micky stared at the open briefcase on his lap filled with cash and smiled at the reward of his hard work. He took out a set of hundred dollar bills and ran his thumb on each one. Twenty five million dollars was hardly enough for him, but he needed the extra money for some unplanned traveling. He was thinking of going to Europe or maybe somewhere tropical this month, and this job paid just enough to cover his pricey needs.

He was sitting on an old leather chair in a small dusty room with walls covered in green flaking wallpaper. Shelves lined up on either side that displayed eccentric human statuettes and antique animal figurines. Frames of tasteless Venice paintings hung next to shaded windows, illuminated by dangling dimmed lights. And several powerfully built men in tacky business suits stood lazily around him—all armed.

The room was located inside an abandoned building six floors above the ground. It was a temporary meeting place for small business deals that needed discreet handling—and by discreet it meant illegal.

A man sat behind a dark mahogany desk across from Micky. His name was Max Tasumaru, Micky’s current employer, and a notorious half-Japanese black market dealer who makes his fortune by trading priceless artifacts from all over the world. Micky didn’t like him, but he was the highest bidder among his contacts.

The man raised his thick eyebrows, questioning Micky’s approval. “That’s the amount you asked for,” he said, pointing his lit tobacco on the briefcase. “It’s your turn to deliver.”

A half-smile crossed Micky’s face as he lifted a large black bag next to his seat and handed it to Tasumaru’s brawny assistant, who he recalled was named Monk. He was over six feet tall with a tattooed bald head and a large black earring on his left ear.

Tasumaru grinned widely. “I knew hiring you wasn’t a mistake,” he said with a delighted laugh as Monk placed the bag on the table. His excitement was evident on his shaky fingers as he unzipped the container, and his eyes shone with wonder at the sight of the treasure he had always wanted. Inside, glistening in pure gold was the death mask of Tutankhamen. It was a precious artifact displayed in the highly-secured Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Tasumaru took out the mask and weighed it in his hands. “This is truly as remarkable as they say.”

“I heard it costs more than three hundred million dollars,” Micky said. “Maybe I should have asked for a bigger price.”

Tasumaru laughed again, but the moment he saw Micky’s humorless expression, his smile disappeared. He took his tobacco to his mouth and puffed out thick smoke, adding a dingy scent into the musty atmosphere. “Don’t get greedy with me boy,” he said. “Do you know what happens to people who get greedy with me?”

Micky glanced quickly around the room. “Let me guess,” he said as he took a brief assessment of his surroundings. There were nine armed men standing on either side of Tasumaru. He recalled two more were guarding the door when he came in. The last one was right behind him, making sure he wouldn’t cause any trouble. “You kill them.”

            Tasumaru laughed. “Smart boy.”

Micky knew that men like Tasumaru had the kind of ego fed by power and control. They normally assume that the number of armed bodyguards they possess made them invincible, making any form of negotiation impossible. But as he ran his thumb on the bills again and listened to the sound of the paper hitting the other, he instantly understood what a real snake the man truly was. He brought the cash to his nose and sniffed. Tasumaru raised a brow at him.

“Do you know what happens to people who pay me counterfeit money?” Micky said with a deadly glare in his eyes.

Tasumaru smiled. “You don’t scare me boy,” he said with a snort. He raised two fingers at Monk, and the man pulled out his gun.

“That’s what they all thought at first,” Micky said, pushing the briefcase on to the floor. He ripped the paper that held the bills together and threw the bundle into the air. It scattered in the room like large confetti. He spun out from his seat and ran to his right leaving nothing but a blurred trail. His fingers reached into the cuff of his sleeve, taking out three thin throw knives and tossed it in one corner of the room. Three men sprawled dead on the floor with a blade piercing through their skulls.

            “Kill him!” Tasumaru yelled.

Micky kicked a shelf, knocking it down as he pushed his body on the wall and ran to another henchman. He pulled the man’s coat over his head and took the dagger from his belt, stabbing him twice with it.  He swirled to the left, tracking his feet on the wallpaper as he ran towards the door, slicing the two guards on the neck. He grabbed their handguns before they dropped on the floor and then he back flipped on to the leather seat, shooting two more men on his sides. He pressed his foot on the backrest of the chair tilting it diagonally and keeping it balanced with his other foot. He spun the seat with his legs like a man on a surfboard and pulled the trigger, shooting five more men that surrounded him. He stopped facing Tasumaru and before Monk could even shoot him, Micky planted a bullet between his eyes and he dropped dead in an instant.

“Are you scared now?” Micky said with a smirk as he aimed his gun at Tasumaru.

The man looked like he was about to pee his pants as he stared at Micky with wide eyes. His face drained to a pasty white hue and his forehead was beaded with sweat. He held his arms up to Micky. “D-don’t shoot!” he said in a quivering voice.

Micky’s jaw clenched. “I want my money.”

“Okay, okay,” Tasumaru said. “But I don’t have it here.”

“I’m not gonna say it again!” Micky yelled, sending Tasumaru trembling on his seat.

“The money is in my car! There’s a hundred million dollars in there, you can take it!”

Micky’s lips formed a thin line as he tried to suppress a laugh. “Glad to know you can be reasoned with.” He brought his guns to his side and stepped off the chair. “Put the mask back in the bag.”

Tasumaru’s eyes grew wider. “What?”

Micky let out an impatient sigh and pressed a gun on Tasumaru’s head. The man’s eyes welled up with tears. His hands shook as he unwillingly lifted the Egyptian mask and zipped it back inside the bag. “Good boy,” Micky said patting Tasumaru’s head with the weapon. He inserted his arm on the container’s handle and carried it away from the man. “I’ll be taking this.”

“But we had a deal,” Tasumaru said.

Micky turned and walked across the room. “You know it’s not really smart to argue with someone holding a gun,” he said, skipping over the dead bodies on the floor. “Especially when you’ve double-crossed him. Now I have to get rid of some evidence.” Micky looked over his shoulder, raised his arm and pulled the trigger, sending a bullet to Tasumaru’s heart. The man crumbled dead on his desk.

Micky tossed the guns on the floor and grabbed the open briefcase filled with fake money. He scattered the contents on the bodies and pulled out a lighter from his pocket, flicking it on and hurling it to the floor. Soon, the papers caught on fire. He stepped out of the room and closed the door behind him. Then his body disappeared into the air as he ran downstairs and reached the ground floor in less than a minute. When he exited the building, he looked up seeing the room he had been to. Orange light filtering through the shades blazed against the dark night along with heavy smoke leaking through unsealed window gaps.

Echoing police sirens mixed with the murmured sounds of the city sent a clear warning and compelled Micky to hurry. And just as he was about to head for Tasumaru’s car, a faint gunshot resounded from a dark alley next to the abandoned building. A few seconds later, a strong gust of wind blew on his face and he caught sight of a blurred image passing by. His eyes followed its direction and saw that it was a man. His light copper blonde hair flailed into the air like a candle flame as he ran at a speed that only Micky can keep up with.

The Nightfall Hunter: Entwined Souls
A Dangerous Foe

Hero had a gun to his face after knocking one of his enemies flat on the pavement. The armed stranger was bigger than him, about six feet tall with iron muscles covered in tattoos. But threat never crossed his mind. The man was afraid, and with good reason.

The sound of the approaching police sirens resounded in a dark and empty alley of downtown New York. The scent of alcohol hung in the midnight air, mixing with the taste of danger and violence. It was a typical night for most cities, where a group of drunken men pick a fight with some random guy with a bad attitude. But this particular group didn’t know that the guy they picked on was as dangerous as the gun pointed at him.

It only took Hero half a minute to beat down all five men twice his size, leaving the last member of the group the only one standing. The man’s eyes were wide in shock from the unearthly skills he had just witnessed. His hand gripped tightly on the gun, steadying his aim with shaky nerves pulsing under his skin.

Hero moved at a speed that no human eye could follow. In a split second he disappeared into thin air, and reappeared with his hand clutching on the man’s neck. He pushed him up against a wall with a loud crack. The gun fired aimlessly across the alley before it fell on the ground with a clank.

The man cried in pain as he spewed blood from his mouth. His broken ribs punctured through his lungs, preventing any oxygen from further entering his body.

The sirens grew louder, catching Hero’s attention. His head turned to his right, seeing the red and blue lights flashing through the shadows. “Looks like your rescue team is here,” he told the stranger.

He loosened his grip and allowed the man to fall on the ground. He kicked the gun with his heavy boots, sending it sliding beneath the dumpster. Warning voices echoed closely from the street’s direction.  The police were approaching, but before any of them reached halfway through the alley, Hero was gone.

                                                            *          *          *

It was almost four in the morning when Hero arrived home. He stepped off the elevator on the 12th floor and dragged his feet on the linoleum towards the other end of the hall. His eyes looked up ahead. The door to his apartment was slightly ajar, instantly stopping him on his tracks. Light from the other side beamed brightly through the cracks, and using his innate sense of hearing, he could tell the intruder was still inside.

Hero proceeded forward without any hesitation. He kicked the door open and it swung to the wall with a loud bang. Inside was a man in a grey suit, standing calmly a few feet away from him.

“It’s Hero, am I right?” he said.

Hero sized up the unwelcomed visitor from head to toe before taking another step forward. He was a little shorter than him and looked too flimsy to pose any form of threat. His facial features indicated his Asian origin and the way he spoke revealed that he was also Korean.

Hero dug a hand in the front pocket of his loose jeans and leaned against the doorway. “You got ten seconds to leave my apartment before I send you flying out the window.”

A smile crossed the man’s face. “Aren’t you going to demand who I am?”

“You’re trespassing. That’s all I need to know,” Hero said in a more serious tone. “Now get the hell out.”

The stranger chuckled, but Hero didn’t find anything amusing. It had been three days since he last slept and his patience was growing thin. He had no interest in dealing with anyone or anything that didn’t include him getting some shuteye.

“My name is John,” said the man.

Hero vanished from the doorway and reappeared in front of John, sending him to take a few steps back. He grabbed him by the collar with clear rage in his eyes. “I gave you a warning,” he said through his teeth.

John had his hands on Hero’s arm, fighting his strong grip. “I know what you are,” he said firmly. “I know everything about you. You think you’re the only one who has this strength and this speed, but you’re wrong. There are more like you Hero, much more.”

Hero’s eyes stared widely back at John, unsure what to make of his words. He loosened his hand, dropping it to his side as he took a few steps away from him. He couldn’t tell if the man was lying, but he allowed himself to calm down long enough to hear him out.

“You’re surprised?” John asked, smoothing the crease on his suit, but Hero didn’t answer. “Of course you are. You weren’t the first to think that you roam this earth alone. Not many of your kind expose their abilities to people and the odds of one finding another are slim to none.” A contented smile crossed his face. “Lucky for me, you were easy to track down.”

Hero carefully analyzed John’s words, questioning their credibility. He walked across the room towards a window and leaned against the wall. He observed John and weighed whether he should believe him or not. But he always wondered why he was different from everyone else, and for the first time, he was face to face with someone who might be able to give him answers. “What do you mean by my kind?” he finally managed to say.

“The answer to that is best shown, not told,” John said with not a trace of humor on his face.  He slowly walked to the door and looked back at Hero. “Everything you need to know about who you are is in my lab. If you want answers, you have to come with me. But I will tell you this.” He stared Hero in the eye and made sure he was paying full attention. “You’re not entirely human.”

*          *          *

Hero held a piece of paper in his hand. Scribbled on it was the address to John’s lab. He couldn’t deny his curiosity to know more about what he truly was, but like most people approached by a stranger, he wasn’t eager to trust John so easily. It was obvious the man had a hidden agenda and it was probably not in his favor.

Night was approaching again, but sleep still wouldn’t come. Hero was sitting on the edge of his bed with several questions clouding his thoughts. Risk was never a problem for him, and John never crossed him as someone who was dangerous. It was unlikely that the man would try anything stupid, but a strange uneasiness was nagging the back of his mind that only came to him as a vague warning. It was preventing him from keeping a calm head.

Hero immediately memorized the address with an accuracy of a photographic memory. He crumpled the paper in his hand and threw it across the room. Although his bedroom was pitch-dark, his eyes saw perfectly through the blackness. The paper landed effortlessly inside the trash bin.

With a beep, the digital clock on Hero’s bedside table informed him that it was time to leave. He grabbed the key to his car and headed for the door. But the moment he set his foot outside his bedroom, he quickly noticed something was wrong. Familiar sounds echoed in his ear, telling him he wasn’t alone. His head turned towards the front door, hearing faint heartbeats and low breathing on the other side. Looking down, a shadow filtered through the crack beneath the entrance. He waited for a knock but heard nothing else.

The shadow moved and the door swung with a bang as the stranger kicked it open, revealing his unfamiliar face. The man was tall with a slightly bigger build, but he looked just about Hero’s age. The smug smile on the stranger’s face hinted no fear and hesitation, but Hero didn’t find him intimidating. What bothered him though was the sight of his white blonde hair. His spiked locks stuck out from his head in such a disarrayed manner that Hero thought the man was wearing a headdress. But he had no time to deal with another idiot with no clue who he was up against.

Hero rolled his hand into a fist and vanished in plain sight. He pulled his arm back and threw a straight punch to the man’s face. But before he could even get close, the stranger quickly moved behind him, catching him off-guard. He spun around, blocking a punch with his arm. He jabbed his hand to the man’s neck, but the stranger got a hold of his shirt first. His feet left the ground as the man tossed him over his shoulder. He landed on the floor with a loud thud, knocking the wind out of him.

Colors danced before Hero’s eyes as his vision spun. An amused laughter boomed in his ear, adding a painful ring in his head. When his sight finally cleared, the first thing he saw was the stranger’s wide and cynical smile. The man bent down, grabbing his neck and lifting him up into the air, and before he knew it he was flying across the room. His back hit glass as he went through the window with a loud shattering sound. His hands quickly caught on both sides of the window frame as he planted his feet against it, keeping himself from falling twelve floors down.

Hero stared at the stranger with disbelief. The man stood across from him completely unscathed as his strength slowly diminished from the lack of sleep. His muscles quivered from the exhaustion, barely allowing him to lift his own weight. It was then he realized that winning was not an option. Even with full strength, he wasn’t sure whether he could defeat the man. The stranger fought expertly, unlike the bunch of clowns who usually challenged him. Never in his life had he encountered such a dangerous foe, and with the supernatural abilities the man showed, he knew that he was one of the many others that John had mentioned. But he didn’t imagine he would meet his own kind this way, and more importantly, he didn’t know why the stranger was trying to kill him. Whatever the reason was, he wasn’t willing to risk another minute with the man. With a deep breath, Hero loosened his fingers, releasing his grip and allowed himself to fall.
